At OIT, technology plays an important part in a student's ability to communicate with administration, faculty, and fellow students.

Accordingly, all students must have access to a computer with the minimum specifications set forth below.

  • Ability to use email to correspond with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to access, create, and save documents in Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to run an anti-virus application to ensure that files are virus free

All students must be familiar with Microsoft Word, at minimum*. To enroll in classes online, students must also have access to a computer with the following minimum requirements:


• 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
• 4 GB RAM 
• 250 GB Hard Drive
• OS X 10.7 (Lion) 
• Gigabit Ethernet (Standard on all new models, except MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display)
• 802.11b/g/n on laptops (802.11n standard on all new models) 


• 2.0 GHz Intel Core i3 Processor
• 4 GB RAM
• 250 GB Hard Drive
• Windows 7 or Windows 8
• 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet (Standard on most models)
• 802.11b/g/n on laptops (Standard on most models)


• Microsoft Office 2007 (or higher)
• A current anti-virus application
• Adobe Reader (free download on the Internet)
*Microsoft Word is required to submit all assignments. In addition, some classes might require use of Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. Students are responsible for ensuring that they have the required software before enrolling in a course.


• An Internet Service Provider (ISP)
• An email address
Participation in OIT online programs also requires an Internet Service Provider (ISP). An ISP supplies access to the Internet for a monthly fee. Selection of an ISP provides access to a software installation package, user name, password, email address, and one or more telephone access numbers. In many areas cable TV and digital telephone services offer high-speed Internet access.
